Spring 2021 Anti-Racist Reading Group

Hello Everyone,

You are invited to participate in the Spring 2021 Anti-Racist Reading Group for faculty, staff, and students sponsored by the Office for Equity and Inclusion.  My name is Demetrius Colvin and I am the Director of The Resource Center and will facilitate this Spring’s reading of the 3rd edition of Allan G. Johnson’s Power, Privilege, and Difference (link) for the reading group.  The reading group will meet once a week starting the week of Feb. 15th.  If you are interested in participating, please fill out this form by Friday, February 5th so I can get a sense from you all what will be the best time to meet each week for our discussions and if you need any assistance in getting a copy of the reading.  Let me know if you have any follow-up questions or concerns and I look forward to learning and collaborating with you all this semester!

Graduate Liberal Studies Program Info Session – 12/10

The Wesleyan Continuing Studies office is hosting a virtual information session, on Thursday night at 7pm EST, to talk about the Accelerated MALS degree (applicants may begin earning a Master’s Degree while completing their undergraduate degree). GLS courses taken in the senior year, as part of full-time enrollment, will be included in undergraduate tuition and financial aid packages; plus they count toward residential credit count requirements.

Accelerated MALS degree for Wesleyan undergraduates

A flexible solution for students interested in beginning a Wesleyan MALS degree during their final term as an undergraduate

Who: Students who will enter their spring term senior year needing only 1, 2 or 3 credits to graduate.

What: Students accorded provisional admission to the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) degree may begin taking Graduate Liberal Studies (GLS) courses during their 8th term of undergraduate study.

When: Students must apply for this program prior to the MALS degree application deadline for whichever will be their 7th or 8th term as an undergraduate (Spring 2021 deadline: Thursday, December 10, 2020)

How: If provisionally admitted as an MALS candidate, students get approval to take GLS courses in fall or spring term of their senior year (approval required from class dean, advisor, faculty member and GLS director). After graduation, they may then petition to have courses count toward their MALS if they were not applied to any of the credit, major, Gen Ed, or other requirements for the BA degree.

Why: The purpose of the Accelerated MALS degree is to enable students to begin earning a Master’s Degree while completing their undergraduate degree. In addition, GLS courses taken in the senior year as part of full-time enrollment will be included in undergraduate tuition and financial aid packages and residential credit count requirements.

Cost: Tuition and fees for GLS courses taken during the fall or spring term while the student is an undergraduate are included in the undergraduate tuition for those terms. Once a student has graduated with a BA and has been formally admitted to the MALS program, GLS course tuition and fees are due at the time of registration. Limited need-based financial aid is available to MALS students. Aid for students who are continuing their Wesleyan academic career for a 5th year will be based on parental financial information. Details are in the aid application.

Benefits

  • Students can get a head start on earning their MALS while finishing their undergraduate degree. This may allow the student to complete a Master’s Degree in one year after completing their undergraduate degree.
  • Students who complete three Graduate Liberal Studies courses while an undergraduate will save approximately $9,000 in tuition for their MALS degree.
  • Students who are entering their 8th term at 31 credits may take MALS courses to maintain full enrollment. – See important Considerations about credit values.
  • The degree can be completed in 4 terms (summer/fall/spring/summer).

Important Considerations:

  • Courses may not be counted toward more than one degree. If an MALS course is used to satisfy ANY undergraduate degree requirement, it cannot also count toward your MALS.
  • GLS courses are worth .75 credits (3 credit hours), not 1 Wesleyan credit (4 credit hours) as Wes undergraduate courses are.

Course Withdrawal & Change of Grading Mode Deadline – 11/24

Greetings!

I hope this message finds you finishing up the week and looking forward to Thanksgiving recess. I also want to remind you about two important deadlines coming up next week.

The deadline to withdraw from full-semester and second-quarter classes for the Fall 2020 semester is Tuesday, November 24 at 5:00 p.m., EST.  If you need to withdraw from a course, please send a group email to the instructor, your faculty advisor, and your class dean, and attach a withdrawal form. Remember to complete your portion of the form, including your visa status and course information before you save it and attach it to your email.

If you are thinking about withdrawing from a course:

  • Do use this time to talk to your professors, your advisors, and your class dean about your concerns.
  • Do make sure you are taking advantage of all the resources available to you.
  • Do not wait until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. to seek advice from your instructor, advisor, or dean because you probably won’t hear back from them until after the deadline has passed.

Additionally, the last day to change the grading mode for courses with the student option for the Fall 2020 semester is also Tuesday, November 24 at 5:00 p.m., EST.  Remember, courses that are listed as graded (i.e. A-F) or CR/U are not eligible for a change in grading mode.

Library Services Update – Thanksgiving & Extended Break

Dear Students,

I write with an update on library services between now and the extended break.

Please note that between Thanksgiving and the Extended Break

  • Olin and Science buildings will close as of 12 noon on 11/25 for the Thanksgiving break.
  • Starting Monday, 11/30 through Friday, 12/11, Olin and Science will be open daily 12noon-5pm. Online services and in-building pickup continue as usual.
  • From Saturday, 12/12 to Thursday 12/23, Olin and Science buildings will be closed.  Online services continue as usual.
  • If you are on campus, you can request books and other materials online and pick them up in the Olin vestibule beginning Monday, December 14th.  Hours for pickup are 9-5pm, Monday-Friday except during holiday breaks.
  • If you are off-campus for the extended break, you can request books and other materials online and ask us to mail them your home address.
  • All loans (except for DVDs) have been extended until February 2021

I will be in touch regarding January building hours at a later point.  Should changing campus conditions warrant any changes in hours or services, I will let you know.  You can see the latest information on the Library Services During COVID web page:  https://www.wesleyan.edu/libr/services.html

If you have time, I encourage you to attend “Before You Go” on Wednesday, November 18th 4:30-6:30pm in the Labyrinth Tent.  Folks from the Writing Workshop, Presentation Studio, Library, Peer Advisors, Math Workshop, CAPS, and the Resource Center will be there to connect you with resources and advice to support finishing the semester and completing final exams, papers, and projects remotely and successfully. There will be snacks.

Continuing Writing Workshop Support for Senior Thesis Writers

The Writing Workshop’s support for senior thesis writers continues as we move toward the end of the semester! Apply for a Thesis Mentor by noon EST on December 9, and we’ll do our best to pair you with an experienced peer tutor who will meet with you biweekly throughout the spring to read drafts, provide accountability, and be your cheerleader.

Our second Thesis Writers Retreat is this Friday (November 13), so stop by the Labyrinth Tent in person or join via our Slack remotely between 1 – 4 p.m. for workshops on writing while researching and plenty of time to work and consult with Workshop staff. RSVP here. Our Wednesday night write-ins also continue through the end of the semester. Join us in Olin’s Devlin Room before the break or on the Slack anytime between 8 – 10 p.m. EST on Wednesdays.

Planning Gatherings & Room Reservations

This is a reposted message from SALD sent on November 6th.

Greetings students,

As a follow up to the email from Dean Culliton, there are a limited number of indoor spaces that can be reserved for groups of ten or less, and in addition, as of next week, the academic tents.  Reservations must be made at least 72 hours (3 days) in advance via Room Request, which can be found on your WesPortal.  If you are unfamiliar on how to reserve spaces, information and a video tutorial can be found on the Student Activities and Leadership Development (SALD) website.  Events may not be open invitations, nor advertised on social media. In person events may occur on Foss Hill by completing the Foss Hill Events Form in WesNest.

Note that all spaces will be used as is, and additional furniture or services cannot be added.  Please also keep in mind that the amended student event policy and Covid Guidelines / Agreement still apply.

Lounges in residence halls and program houses are not available for reservation, as it is the only place within their residence that students may interact with more than one person.  Woodframe residents will received additional information regarding use of their backyards, which is also limited to ten individuals.

Senior Packet 2021: Preparing for Graduation

Greetings Class of 2021!

This post contains important information about the graduation process and Wesleyan’s graduation requirements. As you continue to choose courses and build a program of study for the rest of your senior year, it is essential that you know exactly where you stand in terms of fulfilling Wesleyan’s graduation requirements so that everything goes smoothly when degree certification takes place in the spring. Students completing their degrees this fall have already addressed or accessed much of the information provided here. Please review the contents carefully and contact Dean Leathers immediately (tleathers@wesleyan.edu) if you have any questions or concerns.

Graduation does not just happen; you must make it happen! It is important that you fully understand Wesleyan’s graduation requirements and that you are able to interpret your academic record in light of these requirements. Remember, you are responsible for your own graduation and must fulfill all graduation requirements by the end of the Spring 2021 semester in order to earn your diploma.
