Apply for the CEAS Major!

Dear Class of 2021,

I am writing to let you know that WesPortal is now open for those of you who would like to declare a major in the College of East Asian Studies.  You can find out more about our major here. The Wesvising video is here if you prefer video format.

The major application process is very easy:

1) Fill out this online application form.

2) Go onto WesPortal and declare a CEAS major.

If you are thinking about majoring in CEAS, I would like to encourage you to declare the major early.  Once you’ve declared, you’ll get on our mailing list, which lets you know about all the cool events we have going on this semester.  It will also connect you with a CEAS advisor and give you priority when pre-registering for CEAS classes next year.

I hope that many of you will join our wonderful CEAS community!

Lecture: “The Science of Unconscious Bias” with Dr. Keith Maddox March 9, Noon

Implicit or unconscious bias is a fascinating, and sometimes confusing topic that is highly relevant given the increasingly polarized political climate of today. The near constant drumbeat of events and statements that may be perceived to be motivated by bias can be overwhelming, and, paradoxically, can make it difficult for well-intentioned people to address the role their own biases may play in perpetuating unfair systems and practices. As scientists and scholars, we strive to act with impartiality, but it is important for us to be aware that even the most rational among us is subject to unconscious bias that can impact our decisions. In this lecture, Dr. Keith B. Maddox, Associate Professor of Psychology at Tufts University, will provide a thought provoking discussion looking at the science surrounding these issues and offer advice on confronting and overcoming bias.

Dr. Maddox founded the Applied Diversity Science Initiative at Tufts, and he is an expert in social cognition who carries out research into racial phenotypicality bias, the interplay of racial and spatial categories in memory, stereotype threat, and confronting bias.

This lecture is presented with the support of the Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, and the Dean of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Summer Session Financial Aid Deadline — March 1 at midnight

The deadline to apply for Summer Session financial aid before registration opens is Thursday, March 1 at midnight. Registration opens Thursday, March 8 and students will get award emails on Tues, March 6.

Students who need aid but don’t apply by that deadline can still apply before April 20, but won’t get awards and be able to register until April 24.

College of Letters OPEN HOUSE–Feb. 26 and Feb. 27

The College of Letters will be holding Open House Receptions for first-year students on Monday, February 26th at 4:30 PM, and Tuesday, February 27th 12 noon in COL Library (third floor), Boger Hall (41 Wyllys Ave). The COL (a combination of Western philosophy, history, and literature) begins in the first semester of a student’s sophomore year, so interested students must apply as first-years. Applications are due Monday, March 26, 2017. There will be refreshments and current COL students and professors to answer any questions prospective majors might have.
