Join us for a virtual fireside chat-style career conversation with Jesse Greenspan ’06, Director of Supply Chain and Logistics at Partners In Health (PIH). Since joining PIH in 2008, Jesse has supported supply chain and logistics activities in Haiti, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Peru, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone through the development of forecasting methodologies, data management, and reporting, international sourcing and procurement, budget planning, disaster response, and development and implementation of OpenBoxes, an open-source supply chain management software built for global health delivery. Jesse lived in Haiti from 2012-2014 to implement OpenBoxes and set up supply chain systems at University Hospital in Mirebalais. Jesse has previously worked with Cambridge Cares About AIDS, the Johns Hopkins Center for American Indian Health, and Curamericas Global.

This conversation is open to all members of the Wesleyan community, including students, alumni, parents/families, faculty/staff. Q&A to follow.

Speaker Bio:  

Jesse completed her undergraduate degree in Government at Wesleyan University, focusing on International Relations. She received her MSPH in International Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, including work in Liberia and Tanzania, and received a certificate in Health and Humanitarian Logistics from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Student Moderators: 

Ivie Uzamere’ 21 is a double major in Biology and Science in Society, with a strong interest in public health and medicine. Ivie has conducted research at UConn Health, Middletown Community Health Center and Yale School of Public Health with the common goal of addressing health inequity. Ivie is a Track and Field Captain, Co President of Foster Care Connection, Senior Interviewer, Residential Advisor and Secretary for both the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students and Student Athlete of Color Leadership Council.

Fitzroy ‘Pablo’ Wickham ‘21 is a Jamaican-born Wesleyan undergraduate double majoring in Neuroscience and Theatre with a minor in Chemistry. He is a research assistant in the Naegele Lab at the Wesleyan University conducting stem cell research in mice. On campus, he also serves as a Head Resident for Residential Life, Senior Class President, Honor Board/Community Standards Board member and is also involved in the Basal Gang, Wesleyan Minority Association of Premedical Students (WesMAPS), student theatre and the Jamaican Heritage Club, YAADI. His aspirations are to become a neurosurgeon, researcher and actor.

Notes from OISA for December 2020 Completers – 12/18

OISA provided the following information as a reminder for students on F-1 visas completing their degree requirements in Fall 2020.

Please read the information below about your F-1 status:
  • Please check your current I-20 to make sure that it has the correct program end date (it should say 12/19/2020). If you need a new I-20 with an updated program end date, please let me know. If you are currently on campus, I can drop of your updated I-20 at p-safe for you to pick up. If you are currently off campus/outside of the United States, please purchase a shipping label via UEMS. An updated I-20 will be shipped to you. Please keep ALL your I-20s in a safe place. If you would like to claim any of your F-1 benefits, you will be asked to present all your past I-20s.
  • Please read the “Prepare for your End of Program” page carefully. This page contains information about grace period if you are currently in the United States. If you need your SEVIS records transferred to a different SEVP-certified school, please let me know ASAP. The transfer must be completed within 60 days after the program end date listed on your I-20.
  • If you are interested in applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, please read the OPT page on the OISA website. Please note that you MUST be physically in the United States to submit your OPT application to USCIS.
  • If you do not wish to apply for OPT, your F-1 status ends at the end of your grace period or the day you exit the United States, whichever comes first. You will NOT be able to use your F-1 visa/I-20 to come back to Wesleyan for the graduation ceremony in May 2021 if there is an in-person celebration. You will need to enter the U.S. using a different visa that matches the purpose of the trip (likely a B1/B2 visa – a business/tourist visa), even if your F-1 visa has not expired. Please check with your local U.S. embassy about how you can obtain a B1/B2 visa if desired.

This workshop will address the frequently asked questions about OPT and OPT STEM extension. We will help you make realistic plans to complete your OPT application, answer any questions you may have about I-765 and have a discussion with you if you are not sure if applying for OPT is an appropriate choice for you after graduation.

Please join the OISA tomorrow (October 14) for the second Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop of the season. This workshop is for F-1 students who wish to work in the United States after graduation.

Optional Practical Training (OPT): Filling Out the I-765 Form  

Wednesday, October 14, 12:00-1:00 p.m. EDT

In the workshop, OISA staff will provide step-by-step guidance to fill out the I-765 (application for employment authorization) form. Please visit the USCIS website and download the I-765 form before you attend the workshop. Using the current I-765 form is critical to your OPT approval. As of today, the most current form should say “Expires 07/31/2022” on the top right corner and “Edition 08/25/20” at the bottom left cover of each page.

Wesleyan Alumni Panel: Healthcare Crisis: Facing the Many Aspects of the COVID Pandemic – 6/10

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I hope all of you and your families are doing well. I am writing to share information about an alumni panel event regarding the current healthcare crisis being hosted via Zoom on Wednesday evening (June 10th). Experienced Wesleyan alumni will discuss the wide-ranging impacts the pandemic has had on healthcare delivery, from hospital systems to Telemedicine, to the effects on private practices and ‘non-essential’ care, the impact on at-risk populations managing psychiatric and/or addictive disorders, and the ethical considerations of resources allocations.

The discussion will be moderated by our very own Chief Medical Director, Thomas McLarney, MD, and is open to all members of the Wesleyan community.

Conversations with Alums in Clinical Psychology – 2/10, 3/23 & 4/13

The Clinical Careers in Psychology Q&A – jointly brought to you by the Gordon Career Center and the Psychology Department – continues Monday, February 10th at 12:15pm at the Gordon Career Center (lunch will be provided).

Our next featured alumnus is Claire Haiman, PsyD ’95, a clinical psychologist at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Claire Haiman is a clinical psychologist and Director for the Mental Health Services division of the Student Health Service (SHS) at Columbia. Prior to joining SHS, Claire had been at the Counseling Services of the New School University and at the New York State Psychiatric Institute where she had worked in both the Eating Disorder Treatment/Research Unit and the Department of Neuroscience. She specializes in mindfulness-based body-focused psychotherapy and is trained in Somatic Experiencing, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Dr. Haiman earned her PsyD at Rutgers University and completed her internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center.

Boston Career Treks in March 2020 – Apply by 2/13 & 2/20

The Boston Career Trek program begins on-campus and includes a day trip to Boston to meet with Wesleyan alumni at their places of work. Students will have the option to choose from treks in one of six different fields including sales/marketing, tech, health, journalism/media, education and visual arts. More information (including participating employers) is available on Handshake, and interested students should apply by Thursday, February 13.

Additional career trek opportunities this spring include the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, the Global Health & Innovation Conference, the Jackson Laboratory, and the 2020 MIT Sustainability Summit. These opportunities all have an application deadline of Thursday, February 20th.
