Come see how 3D scanning and printing, drone photogrammetry and VR visualization helps us to better study, understand and experience the past!

In addition to being a passionate advocate for teaching technology as a liberal art, Ian Roy is a brilliant technologist who has worked with our archaeological team on sites and materials from Greece and Crete. In his talk he will demonstrate how new tools, techniques and workflows are being employed to better document and study archaeological sites and artifacts (and perhaps an opportunity to try the VR goggles).

COL Applications due Mon., March 26

Dear Members of the Class 2021,                                                             

Please be aware that the deadline for applications to the COL is this Monday, March 26.

COL is a three year, interdisciplinary major for the study of European literature, history, and philosophy, from antiquity to the present.  During these three years, students participate as a cohort in a series of colloquia in which they read and discuss works together (in English), learn to think critically about texts in relation to their contexts and influences—both European and non-European—and in relation to the disciplines that shape and are shaped by those texts.  Majors also become proficient in a foreign language and study abroad in order to deepen their knowledge of another culture.  The COL, a unique college within the University, has its own library and workspace where students can attend lectures, study together, and meet informally with their professors, whose offices surround the library.

Several of the CSS Tutors and many of the CSS Students will speak.  This Info Session will offer you an opportunity to ask questions about the CSS.  Pizza will be served.

REMINDER: Pre-Registration planning for your next semester classes is open now and closes on Monday, November 13 at 5:00PM.   Before then, you must meet with your faculty advisor about your tentative course selection for discussion and approval, so make an appointment now!  Scheduling occurs on November 14.

Writing can be scary, but let us help you start the new year out strong! Apply for a Writing Mentor! A Writing Mentor will meet with you privately each week to help you with writing in all of your classes. Mentors are trained to help you at all stages of the writing process, whether it be brainstorming, structure, grammar, style, or time management. By having a mentor, you will be able to continuously improve your writing throughout the semester. Start out strong, and end even stronger!

We work with students of all writing abilities and in all disciplines, and all services are, of course, free.

AMST 150: Indigenous Middletown: Native Histories of the Wangunk Indian People

 Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:20-11:40am in CAMS 1

This is a writing intensive course in which students will be introduced to the new field of settler colonial studies, the rapidly transforming field of critical indigenous studies, along with Native American history and historiography addressing southern New England. Taking up a decolonizing methodological approach, the class will focus on the sparsely documented history of the Wangunk Indian Tribe, the indigenous people of the place we call “Middletown,” also known as Mattabesett. The Wangunk people, part of the Algonquin cultural group, historically presided over both sides of the Connecticut River in present-day Middletown and Portland. Although regarded as “extinct” by settlers by the time the American Revolution broke, Wangunk individuals continue to live into the 21st century.
